How Much Its Cost to Have Baby Carriages

average cost Typically: $50-$300 high cost High: $700+

Strollers come in a number of styles, including umbrella, carriage and jogging models; travel systems; and strollers designed to carry two or more children. When buying for newborns, make sure to select a fully reclining model or a model that will allow you to attach an infant car seat. Travel systems, which include an infant car seat, car seat base and stroller, are popular options.

Typical costs:

  • Strollers typically run $50-$300 for traditional strollers; all-terrain strollers generally run $130-$300; and high-end strollers can cost more than $700.

What should be included:
  • Look for strollers that have a 5-point harness system, brake locks, swivel wheels, a weather guard and removable/washable upholstery. Built-in storage and toys come with some models.
Additional costs:
  • Lightweight aluminum frames cost more than steel.
  • Extras like a built-in sound package will raise the cost.
Shopping for a stroller:
  • Consumer Reports[1] says a stroller is one of the most important pieces of baby gear parents will buy. Find a model to fit your lifestyle. Active parents should consider a rugged, all-terrain model suited to jogging or navigating unpaved trails. Urban dwellers who use public transportation should consider a lightweight but durable folding model that can handle city streets.
  • Test the stroller for sturdiness and maneuverability and practice operating it with one arm. Factor in your baby's weight when evaluating the heaviness of a stroller.
  • Look for a certification sticker indicating that the stroller meets the minimum requirements of the American Society for Testing and Materials[2] voluntary standard and for manufacturers that participate in the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association's[3] certification program.
  • Certified companies include Evenflo, Graco, Kolcraft, Maclaren[4] and Peg Perego[5] .

Brand: Chicco Model: Cortina
Store: Babies R Us

We had gotten a lot of advice to get a infant car seat "Travel System" -- which allows you to place an infant car seat into a stroller so you don't have to switch seats. We had originally thought we'd get the Graco Snugrider, but when we "test drove" a bunch of different strollers at a store, we found that the Cortina worked best for us (and our backs!). I'm really glad we tried several different strollers before buying to see what kind of handles (bar or handles), and heights (adjustable, lower or higher) worked best for us. Both the Chicco and the Graco Snugrider get a lot of good reviews on Consumer Reports, Baby Bargains, etc.
